The European Commission has announced the finalist cities for the “European green city awards”, and Bistrita is among the finalist cities.

The “European Green Capital” and “Green Leaf” awards recognize the outstanding efforts made by large and small cities to improve the living environment of their inhabitants, as well as the commitment with which they stimulate new transformative activities, announces the Commission’s representation, in a press release quoted by news.ro.

The finalists for the “European Green Capital 2024” award are the cities of Valencia, from Spain, and Cagliari, from Italy. The “Green Capital” award recognizes and rewards local efforts to improve the environment and, therefore, the economy and the quality of life in cities with over 100,000 inhabitants.

The award is given annually to a city that is a trailblazer in terms of an ecological urban lifestyle.

In addition, three cities have been shortlisted as finalists for the “Green Leaf 2024” award, which recognizes the sustainable efforts of small cities (between 20,000 and 99,999 inhabitants): Elsinore (Denmark), Velenje (Slovenia) and Bistrita (Romania).

The Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevičius, said:

“Cities are at the center of our fight against climate, pollution and biodiversity crises. It is about combating air pollution, promoting clean mobility, reducing energy consumption in buildings, greening urban spaces and taking a completely different approach to waste management. You are showing Europe the way forward and are at the forefront of efforts to deliver the systemic and long-term changes called for in the European Green Deal.”

The finalist cities announced today were chosen based on 12 environmental indicators for the “Green Capital”, respectively six environmental thematic areas for the “Green Leaf” awards. In October, they will present to the jury chaired by the Commission, setting out their communication strategy and an action plan on how they intend to implement their strategy and engage their citizens and stakeholders to meet their environmental goals.

The winning cities will be announced on October 27, 2022, during the awards ceremony in this year’s “Green Capital”, Grenoble.
