British Prime Minister Liz Truss told her Israeli counterpart that she is considering moving the British embassy from Tel Aviv to the disputed holy city of Jerusalem, DPA reports Thursday.

According to TVR, the British Prime Minister raised the issue of the possible move in a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid on Wednesday at the United Nations summit in New York, following the measure taken by former American President Donald Trump.

Britain has long maintained its embassy in Tel Aviv despite the fact that Israel designates Jerusalem as its capital.

Trump, when he was president, caused controversy by moving the US embassy to Jerusalem in 2017.

A Downing Street spokeswoman said Truss had informed Lapid of her “review of the current location of the British Embassy in Israel”.

When she was foreign minister, she committed to this during the Conservative leadership race in a letter to the Conservative Friends of Israel.

Truss said he understood the “importance and sensitivity” of this location.
