Death Valley, one of the driest places in the world

In the USA, the famous Death Valley (Death Valley) in California, one of the driest and hottest places in the world, is affected by floods of proportions after intense rains fell in the region – a very rare weather phenomenon here – which they destroyed the access roads.

On Friday, almost 1,000 people remained isolated because of this, announced the authorities that manage this national park located in eastern California.

In this area, the floods tore sections of pavement from the roads and flooded offices and hotels in the area.

Thus, “All roads serving the park are currently closed and will remain closed until officials determine the extent of the damage,” the authorities announced.

In this regard, approximately 500 visitors and 500 employees could not leave the national park on Friday due to unprecedented rains. In some areas, 37 liters of water fell per square meter, while the total annual average amounts in the region are below 50 liters per square meter. The average amounts of precipitation that fell on Friday almost equaled the record recorded in this park.

Currently, Death Valley National Park is known as one of the hottest places in the world and the driest area in North America. Over one and a half million tourists visit the area every year.

However, global warming changes the pattern of precipitation, as the atmosphere becomes more and more loaded with moisture. According to UN climate experts (IPCC intergovernmental group), even if the world were to limit warming to +1.5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels, some regions will be affected by an increase in the frequency, intensity and/or amount of heavy rainfall . The risk of these episodes of heavy precipitation increases with the increase in temperature.
