The European Commission announced on Friday that it has decided to open a non-compliance procedure against Hungary, which imposes different fuel prices on vehicles with foreign registration numbers and vehicles with Hungarian numbers, in violation of single market rules, informs AFP and TVR.

“Vehicles with Hungarian registration numbers, including tractors and agricultural machinery with Hungarian documents, are entitled to official fuel prices lower by 60 to 70%. Instead, all other vehicles with a foreign registration number cannot benefit from these reduced prices “, underlines the Community Executive.

The Commission considers it particularly important in the current geopolitical situation to ensure the proper functioning of the single market, as it is the main tool for counteracting the current disruptive economic effects of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Unilateral actions at national level and the introduction of discriminatory treatment run counter to the principles of free movement in the single market and cannot be a solution.

The initiation of the infringement procedure consists in sending a letter of formal notice. Hungary now has two months to respond to the concerns expressed by the Commission. Otherwise, the Commission may decide to send a reasoned opinion to Hungary. In the absence of a reply to the reasoned opinion or if the comments submitted in the reply are unsatisfactory, the Commission may decide to proceed to the next stage of the infringement procedure and refer the matter to the EU Court of Justice.
