The decision on the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO would

Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, several countries have expressed a desire to join NATO. These include Sweden, but also Finland, but Turkey has strongly opposed it from the beginning.

Finland and Sweden submitted their candidacies for NATO membership on May 18, and since then Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has opposed such a decision, and Turkey’s position has not changed.

Akif Çağatay Kılıç, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Turkish Parliament, provided the latest details. On Tuesday, he announced that Ankara plans to postpone by one year the decision on Sweden and Finland’s accession to NATO.

Regarding the reason given by Turkey, the official claims that during this period, Ankara has the chance to receive sufficient guarantees from these two countries to fight the Kurdish groups.

Turkey wants to block Finland and Sweden from joining NATO

According to Akif Çağatay Kılıç, “This issue is related to vital national interests. We are ready to prevent their accession during the year, if necessary, “Kılıç was quoted as saying by the Turkish press. He also stressed that among NATO member countries, Turkey has the second largest army and is helping Ukraine at the moment, which is why it deserves more respect.

Thus, “Turkey has the second largest army in NATO and provides drones to help Ukraine defend itself. We deserve more respect, “he said.

In addition, the Turkish official added that since becoming a NATO member, Turkey has consistently fulfilled its obligations under the alliance. On the other hand, he has made harsh accusations against Sweden and Finland, which he says are safe from terrorist organizations and do not respect borders.

At present, he says, “Finland and the South are providing shelter to terrorist organizations that are killing our people, are not respecting our borders and pose an existential threat to our country,” he added.

We note that Turkey is currently the only country blocking the examination of Finland and Sweden’s applications to join NATO. The reasons given by the Turkish leader are related to the support of Kurdish groups that are considered terrorists in Turkey.

Erdogan, on the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO

For his part, President Erdogan has been saying since May that Turkey must protect its borders. “We have such a sensitivity to protect our borders from terrorist attacks,” Erdogan said.

At the same time, he also said that NATO allies had never supported Turkey in the fight against Kurdish militant groups, including the Syrian Kurdish YPG, which Ankara also considers a terrorist group closely linked to the PKK.

Therefore, “NATO enlargement is significant to us only in proportion to the respect it will show for our sensibilities,” he said at the time.
