Giants Mastercard and Visa have announced that they are suspending their operations in Russia in protest of the invasion of Ukraine, the BBC reports, quoted by news.ro.

The Russians will no longer be able to use the ATMs, will no longer be able to make online payments and will have to withdraw money from the counter.

Mastercard said on Saturday that Russian banks would no longer be supported by its network and that any cards issued by the company abroad would not work at Russian merchants or ATMs.

The decision was made, given the “unprecedented nature of the current conflict and the uncertainty of the economic environment.”

Meanwhile, Visa has announced that it will work to stop all transactions in the country in the coming days, and Visa cards issued by financial institutions outside Russia will cease to operate in the country.

According to the company’s general manager, Al Kelly, Visa was “forced to act following Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine and the unacceptable events we witnessed.”

“We regret the impact this will have on our esteemed colleagues and on the customers, partners, merchants and cardholders we serve in Russia. This war and the continuing threat to peace and stability demand that we respond according to our values, “he said.
